In the city center of Ghent we have a stunning library, called De Krook. It was the ideal place to showcase my videowork, General Beauty. Lighting up the library with art through several windows and emitting new aesthetics into the city center of Ghent.

Can a common denominator of beauty be found across all of art history? Imagine distilling the essence of thousands of masterpieces—from Kandinsky to Rembrandt to Van Gogh—into something we might call universal beauty. That is precisely what was explored here. By indexing 5,000 paintings and analyzing their distinct characteristics through machine learning, a new visual language emerged.
But who owns these new paintings? Where does the copyright reside in this fusion of human creativity and machine assimilation?
The knowledge in library books, now filled with outputs of general knowledge, can be equally beautiful when triggered the right way.
